Is a child in need of help ?

Who is a role model? A role model is a person whose behaviors, examples and success are or can be emulated by others especially by young people. Role models may have a considerable impact on a person’s value, education and chosen training objective. While in high school some years back I used to be in the rugby team and one person who really inspired me and who I looked upon was former Kenya sevens star and captain Humphrey Kayange whose performance earned him an award of the presidential order of Golden Warriors. I remember how during school holidays I would go to cybers and watch the endless videos of him playing and somehow, I used to Incorporate some of his skillful plays in my game.

In the recent years’ athletes have been greatly idolized, with many young people tending to follow their behaviors and examples and trying to borrow some traits to them. Former heavyweight boxing champions Lennox Lewis influenced many by announcing real men don’t hit women, and since then men hardly raise their hands-on women. Role models have an astounding effect on the lives of young people in our society. A role model has the ability to shape the views, ideals, and actions of a young person. Role models help youth to discover how they wish to become in the future. The qualities and influence that role models have over young people is tremendous.

When one is a role model, there some qualities that one should have; they include

  1. Behaving in ways that reflect high morals.

As a role model, you should always live a life that people especially the young ones can copy. Don’t post inappropriate messages, pictures, videos etc. on your social media platforms since we are in a digital age where even our young kids are on these platforms.

  1. Share aspiration quotes

One thing that always keep us going are the many aspiration and inspiration quotes that are all over the internet. Many of the quotes are from famous people who impacted a certain course.

  1. Devotes time and energy to community services

As a role model it is good to spend time doing community service and giving back to the society. This may inspire the youth to follow your footsteps and may be an impact to the society. E.g. Liverpool star from Senegal, Sadio Mane built hospitals and schools in his homeland an act that really received lots of praise.

As a role model you have a great influence on the young athletes which include

  1. Fitness

Being fit is very important for our bodies because we can avoid being obese which is a lead cause of people having heart attacks and other complicated diseases.  Reports indicate that there is still over 18 percent of children between 6-11years old who are obese Athletes are the perfect messengers to show us the benefits of rigorous exercise and how it keeps you on top of your game. They can encourage children to do more regular exercises.

  1. sportsmanship

When athletes display good behavior in the field and always respects their opponents, it will influence others to act the same thus creating good sportsmanship in the field and outside the field, it will teach our young kids how to behave with their opponents and how they can handle victory and defeat.

  1. Inspire confidence

“With confidence, you have won before you have started”, confidence is a vital instrument when it comes to sports. Role models usually display confidence before going into the field for competitions, the confidence they show can inspire children to believe in themselves not only on the feild but also in thier day to day activities.

But not all role models have great influence on kids, in recent times many athletes have been found guilty of using performance substance (doping) that increase their energy during any event, some of these substance are usually illegal, this may have a negative impact on the young kids who look upon the certain role model, in a worse scenario it can influence them to use the banned substances. Children should not be 100% attached to their role models. Some behaviors by some role models can disappoint kids’ athletes.
